To Me, Insurance Means a Good Night’s Sleep

Financial Literacy, General Information

When I was growing up, my parents both had jobs that familyhelped people.

My mom was the manager of a family owned and operated shoe store in our neighborhood, just a mile from our home. The founder had come to the US from Germany when he was a young man, and had learned shoemaking and shoe repair from his father. Mom was the first non-family member to manage the store, which was a big honor! By that time they carried national brands, but they were still very well known for custom fitting, especially for children who had physical disabilities. She took a lot of pride in her work.

My dad was a regional service representative for an insurance company. His job was to visit nursing homes in his territory and help their administrative team complete the necessary forms to get their proper payments. When he completed the site visit, he would often stop to talk with the patients. He always had funny dinner table stories about the little towns he went to and the people he got to know.

Two essential services were being offered: shoes and insurance. And it’s important to have a good fit for both!

For most of my young life, my parents took care of my shoes and insurance for me. It didn’t get really interesting until I graduated from college and started working full-time. I bought a lot of very high heels that my mom guaranteed would ruin my feet. When it came to having insurance, I knew it was important—I just didn’t think it was all that important, especially as it related to finding a job. I wanted the challenge and variety of freelance writing, and already had quite a few businesses lined up. Unfortunately, freelance writing didn’t come with medical, dental or life insurance. But I was 22 and healthy, and I needed every penny to pay for rent, food, clothes, my car and gas. After all, what could go wrong?

Well, I was also a writer, and had a very active imagination. My parents, knowing this, used it to their advantage, asking me to picture a series of unfortunate events, to borrow a phrase, and how that could affect my health, happiness, finances and future.

I got the message and have been on the insurance bandwagon ever since. There aren’t a lot of things in life that you can control, but insurance helps you prepare for the unexpected. When I make my insurance payments for my car, home and life insurance, I consider that payment for a good night’s sleep.

You can imagine why I was delighted to learn that Mission Fed’s CUSO would be offering LiveSmart Insurance Services, LLC to our credit union members! It makes a lot of sense, since Mission Fed offers Auto Loans and Home Loans. And we obviously care about our members and their loved ones, so Life Insurance is a natural fit.

LiveSmart Insurance does the work for you. Through LiveSmart Insurance, you can receive multiple quotes, and then you can see if they can help you save time and money. If you have a few minutes to call, you can speak with a representative. Or if you’d rather take care of it online, there’s a quick online form. A LiveSmart Insurance representative will get your information and check rates from multiple insurance carriers so you can not only make sure you have the coverage you want, you can also check for the best pricing.

Auto Insurance doesn’t just mean cars! You can check out your options for insurance on boats, RVs, ATVs, motorcycles, travel trailers and coverage for when you go to Mexico. LiveSmart Insurance even covers snowmobiles, which sounds pretty appealing given our hot weather lately.

If you’re fortunate enough to be a homeowner in this beautiful place we call home, LiveSmart can assist you there, too. Of course they cover Home Insurance, but they also can help with insurance for condos and mobile homes.

Here’s an uncomfortable but important topic: Life Insurance. Whether you’re a planner, put things off to the last minute, or find yourself somewhere in between, think about Life Insurance to protect your loved ones and make the call for more information. You can get the conversations started by talking with LiveSmart and asking for their help with quotes.

And here’s a lesson I learned, not from Mom and Dad, but from my first manager: “If you don’t ask, you don’t get.” So talk to the friendly and knowledgeable people at LiveSmart Insurance. Knowing you’re taking care of your home, car and the people you love with the appropriate insurance coverage may help you get a better night’s sleep.
